100,000 Master Tapes Including Guns N’ Roses, Eagles Destroyed in Fire

A 2008 fire on the Universal Studios backlot destroyed over 100,000 master recordings.

Although the fire took place over 10 years ago, statements were made public for the first time recently. When the fire first broke out, not much of a statement was released. The focus was placed on famous studio  sound stages that were damaged by the fire, with a Universal spokesperson even going as far as to deny claims that master tapes had been destroyed.

The New York Times Magazine cites internal company documents and interviews with Universal Music Group employees to dispute those initial claims. It has been revealed that music by Elton John, the Eagles, the Police, Guns N’ Roses, and more were destroyed.
