We lost another legend to the Great Gig in the Sky. Versatile guitarist Rick Derringer passed away Monday at the age of 77 in Ormond Beach, Florida. No cause of death has been revealed.
Derringer was known for his fiery, hard-driving guitar riffs that were so prominent in both his solo career and his work with other musicians. His fame began when he led the garage rock band The McCoys who rose up the charts with their 1965 hit single Hang On Snoopy. Starting in the 1970s, Derringer played guitar for both the Winter brothers’ bands, Johnny Winter And and the Edgar Winter Group. He also worked with Steely Dan, Cyndi Lauper, and “Weird Al” Yankovic along with serving an impressive solo career most notable for the 1973 hit Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo.
We’ll miss you Rick! Thank you for the music. KLOS sends our love to Rick’s family and loved ones.
