A crowd at Wembley Arena in London were stunned Saturday June 13 when Australian pop group 5 Seconds of Summer’s guitarist Michael Clifford suffered burns to the face in an onstage pyrotechnics accident.
The incident, which forced the band to cut their show short, is reminiscent of the famous incident with Michael Jackson during the filming of a Pepsi advertisement as well as Metallica front man James Hetfield’s 1992 Montreal incident.
In the video, Clifford is seen catching fire when he gets too close to the pyrotechnics and running off stage for assistance. Luckily, the guitarist took to Twitter to let his fans know that he was alright and even performed at the bands third London show on Sunday night.
Hetfield suffered second and third degree burns during the August 8, 1992 Montreal show.
“During ‘Fade to Black,’ I’m up there playing the part,” he remembered during the band’s Behind the Music special,“and all these colored flames are going off. I’m a little confused on where I should be — I walk forward, I walk back, the pyro guy doesn’t see that I’ve walked back there, and [makes whooshing noise] colored flame goes right up under me.”
As with Metallica, 5 Seconds of Summer was forced to stop the show but unlike the riots that followed Metallica’s show stoppage, the concert ended without incident.
