Happy Birthday Jerry Garcia: Watch the Grateful Dead Play ‘Deep Elem Blues’ Acoustic in 1981

Jerry Garcia would have been 76 on August 1. To celebrate his memory, here’s a pretty cool acoustic version (except for Phil Lesh’s bass) of the traditional “Deep Elem Blues” from the Grateful Dead’s appearance on The Tomorrow Show, hosted by Tom Snyder, on May 7, 1981. The band played several other tunes on the program and were joined for a hilarious interview segment by Merry Prankster Ken Kesey. At the time, the Dead had just released their wonderful live acoustic double-album, Reckoning, culled from fall 1980 performances at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco and Radio City Music hall in NYC. —Blair Jackson  MORE
