Mike Campbell Talks Dirty Knobs and Heartbreakers With Matt Pinfield On New & Approved

Mike Campbell, original guitarist of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, also plays in his own band Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs. Along with their current tour, they just released a new album “External Combustion,” which Campbell tells Matt Pinfield all about on this episode of New & Approved. You can catch The Dirty Knobs in Los Angeles at The Forum on June 10th!

Campbell chats with Matt about what life was like growing up in Jacksonville, Florida. As a “child of the ’60s,” Campbell was enthralled by the British Invasion. It was the English bands like The Kinks, The Beatles, The Animals, The Yardbirds, and The Hollies that really sparked his interest in music.

We also learn about some of the most amazing experiences Campbell went through with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers along with his own journey. He discusses what it was like working with some of his favorite musicians including Bob Dylan, George Harrison, and Johnny Cash. Campbell also opens up about the loss of Tom Petty and the affect it had on his life.

Campbell has just as much energy as ever and doesn’t plan to ever retire. He talks about the joy he feels that is as strong as when he first started playing music. He tells Matt all about what we can expect at a Dirty Knobs show, which in a nutshell is a good time for everyone!
